This was a project I did during the COVID lockdown. I was inspired by the knife designs I had seen on various YouTube videos, which is also where I learned about the processes of making the knife. This was just a fun thing I wanted to try to test my abilities and pass some time.
Started with a 1095 high carbon steel blank, used hand tools to cut out profile.
Sanded using belt sander and hand sanding, then filed down the bevel to prepare the edge. Also drilled 3 holes for 1/4 inch dowels to secure handle.
Austentized the knife using MAPP gas torches (~1550 °F), quenched in canola oil, then tempered in 500 °F oven for ~ 4 hours.
After cleaning the knife, 2 blocks of walnut wood on either side were epoxied, then dowel pinned with 3 brass dowels. Sanded the profile down to be as ergonomic as possible for my hand.
Sharpened the knife using stone wheel grinder and belt sander. Applied a polyurethane coat on the handle.
Results
Passed the paper test for sharpness
Worked for cutting meats and vegetables
Since this was a personal project I was happy with this as my first time making a knife, and tested my abilities for quality
